Matthew Flinders' Cat Bryce Courtenay 9780670910618 Books Reviews

I really thought this book is good.
This is a perfect book for anyone. The characters are warm and well developed. The plot moves quickly. Bryce Courtenay is a fine author whose work in the United States is under-appreciated. The book is a must read for anyone who has ever visited Sydney, Australia.
Brilliant story. In true Bryce Courtney fashion, he turns the misfortune of one person into a tale of caution for someone else who may very well experience the same misfortune. In addition to the main story line, is another tale that is set in a completely different world from that of the main plot yet urges the reader to keep turning the page to see where both stories are headed....

This book is a true classic.
Another great story from Bryce Courtney very well presented by Humphrey Bowers.
This is actually the first Bryce Courtney book I have read and it is a fantastic story, a wonderful mix of history and present time. It really makes you realise that alot of things a re definately not as they seem in our society. The main characters in this book really are wonderfully portrayed, if you have grown up in the Sydney area you will really become drawn into this story as you will be able to picture the people & places in great detail as they evolve.
I am not a very emotional person, but when I finished reading this book I was emotionally exhausted. It is a telling modern tale of struggle, failure, and bouncing back. The story of the alcoholic lawyer's downfall and rise again was intense. The gripping way in which Mr. Courtenay tells the story of the orphan boy's existence nearly brought tears to my eyes. Several times I had to put the book down because the powerfulness of it all was a little too much at points. It is an outstanding read and would recommend it to anyone who wishes a read which will get you thinking about inner demons.
Very challenging subject matter, dealing with the entrenched protected paedophile rings in high places that were such a scandal in NSW in the 20th century. Whether they are gone, ir simply gone underground is a matter for conjecture, but Courtenay chose to do a DIckens-style exposition of the problem.
At times the characters are simply vehicles for the plot, but Courtenay managed to keep and engage our attention.
