I bought this book for David Sedaris to sign. Get this in conjunction with the audio book. There is nothing better than hearing him read these stories. We laugh our butts off listening to him. One time, we had to pull over because we were scared of getting into an accident. I would go into more detail, but it's better to listen or read for yourself. He's absolutely incredible.

Me Talk Pretty One Day David Sedaris 9780349113913 Books Reviews

I know that Sedaris is brilliantly funny. I've enjoyed him on radio many times, so I was disappointed that the belly laughs I expected (and was promised by other reviewers) never arrived. I kept reading because the stories were interesting and because I've like the author as a speaker, but this book did not make me want to read more of Sedaris. Instead it made me hungry for more of him on radio. I suppose Sedaris fans will love the book and hate my review. So be it. The friend I gave the book to after I read it, loved it too.
I felt like this book got off to a slow start. The author's childhood reminisces were not as entertaining to me as his description of living in France as an expat. The stories about his French lessons and his wanderings in Paris were hilarious. The second half is enjoyable enough to slog through the first half.
I didn't realize that this was a collection of short stores, so I was really confused for a few chapters wondering where he was going. Part one was just weird and random in my opinion, even after I figured out that it wasn't linear. I kept re-reading to see if I missed where it was supposed to be funny. I almost quit reading but pushed myself to finish since I purchased it. I finally started laughing in Part Deux and I can see where the 5 star reviews come from there.
The thing about being Baby-boomers was that we had fathers who grew up during the Great Depression. To a man, they were determined to make our childhoods as miserable as theirs. It's a tribute to the determination of the "Greatest Generation" that they succeeded so well with such poor material. It's easy to make your children miserable when there's not enough food to eat, but when you not only have money for necessities, but for luxuries, it's MUCH harder. And so our fathers had to resort to tricks like Lou Sedaris forcing his tone-deaf children to take up musical instruments or boring them half to death with his nerdy-engineer explanations of things that no one wanted explained. In general, we preferred our mothers who were too busy watching soap operas to know we existed. That was life in the Good Old Days and you can have it.

But we got even with them. Like David Sedaris, we went off to college and grew our hair long or dressed funny or did drugs or got useless degrees in Art History just to annoy them. Or we dropped out of college and bummed around the country with people our parents moved to the suburbs to keep us away from. Or we took menial jobs to find out how "real people" live. What makes Sedaris great is that he did ALL of these stupid things. His sister Amy showed true brilliance when she imitated a family friend and propositioned her father on the phone, but for sheer parental-grief-giving, David has my vote.

NOW, of course, David Sedaris is successful and famous, although his life still leans toward the odd and unfortunate. Who else ends up in a guest bathroom with a large fecal bolus of someone else's making? The flushing toilet is an amazing invention, but you can only push it so far before it pushes back.

But the best part of this book is the author's attempts to learn to speak French. He claims to have moved to France knowing only the French for "bottleneck." Realizing that he needed at least a few more French words to carry on witty conversations, he enrolled in a language class taught by a rabid pit bull with a room full of people of many different ages, cultural backgrounds, and experiences. They have only one thing in common, the instructor hates them all.

I discovered David Sedaris several years ago and gobbled down his books like a starving woman. Re-reading them now and enjoying them just as much the second time around. These are keepers.
Based on all the reviews I bought this and prepared to be fantastically entertained. I couldn't wait for the laughter to bubble up and spill out of me. I'm still waiting. Sadly, I have finished the book and other than a few chuckles, no laughter, as was promised by the other reviewers. In fact , perhaps because the reviews set it up as a hilarious read, I was expecting too much, but most of wasn't funny at all. I do agree with the other reviews that the section on him learning to speak French was funny, but it's a small section of the book. I kept reading it waiting for the laughter to come, for the promised humor to appear-after all many of the reviewers had said the author was the funniest writer out there, but if he is this book isn't a good representation of his work. If you are looking for a laugh out loud, how do I not wake my spouse up while I read this in bed cause I'm laughing so hard book, skip this one. I don't know how much the other reviewers were paid but that's the only thing that explains the over the top reviews.
Highly recommended from a friend --- I'm not disappointed. I'm more than half way through the book and i want to hear more. I connected with the author because of the clever humor he and siblings used to mess with their parents. This book is amazing on tape and I love the author's narration. Its so much more authentic and expressive.
This is probably the funniest book I've read in my life. His humor is eccentric the Never Fails to make me laugh out loud.
