For many years, I’ve heard about Looking for Mr. Goodbar, which has since become a household phrase. I knew what it signified, or at least, in part, what I believed it meant. I was a kid when the movie came out and I had heard through the grapevine of those parents who allowed their children to venture to the silver screen to see it, that it was a true story of a woman who perused bars for men to engage in sexual activity resulting in one-night stands. Fast-forward to 2018—you can imagine my surprise when I saw this novel was listed on Bookbub and I decided to download it and read at a later date. Welp, that date was now. I couldn’t wait to find out what all the hoopla was about? After getting into the story of Theresa, I quickly learned that Rossner took creative licenses and wrote a story based off the real-life murder of Roseann Quinn. Miss Quinn was a twenty-seven year old who did what Theresa did by hanging out in random bars picking up men and sleeping with them without any form of protection. And I have to say, I’m really not sure how I feel about this novel.
Of course, Looking for Mr. Goodbar was a critically acclaimed novel and New York’s Best Sellers back in the ‘70s bringing about much talk and discussion and then made into a number one movie starring Diane Keaton. I remember watching the film much later when I was in my late teens, and I thought it was exciting, but that was because I believed the movie adaptation I viewed was truly based on the story of Theresa. Well, that’s what I get for thinking!
Unfortunately, I didn’t like this book. I found it to be extremely boring and drawn out on the same ‘ole same. I found the story to be sort of ironic, especially seeing as how Theresa starts out as this good girl and too shy for her own good. It took her professor to bring her out of her shell and ultimately led to her sexual exploration, humiliation and untimely death. What really angered me with the story is the stupidity of Theresa. My goodness, how could she just sleep with any ole Joe Smoe without any protection whatsoever? And we wonder why Aids is prevalent in our society today and a countless other STDs floating among the sexual pool? Sheesh!
I found this story very lackluster. It wasn’t anything to write home about in my opinion. I’m not exactly sure how this book was ranked critically acclaimed? Perhaps because of its content in its hay-day, but I wasn’t amused. In all fairness to Rossner, based on the way we live today and the things we see on film and read in books, this story really pales in comparison. It’s almost corny, if you will. I think the biggest let down for me was learning this story I’ve heard so much about forever in a day turned out to be based on a true story. Hmm, not sure where I was at, but I was always under the impression this story was about a real person. Oh well, the message certainly wasn’t lost on me, though.
I’m not sorry I read the story. It had its interesting moments. I can at least cross this one off my list.

I chose to read this after finishing the excellent interpretive biography of this same general story written by the late Lacey Fosburgh. That book, "Closing Time" was amazing. This novel, inspired by the murder of the same young teacher was so disappointing. The main character, Theresa Dunn, was such a wishy washy nag who tried to come off as being above every man in her life. I can see why she was getting called names and pushed around so much. In one paragraph she would flit from excited and happy to annoyed and disgusted with no warning. She had no idea what she wanted out of life and never hesitated to take that out on others whether it be her older beautiful sister, the young lawyer who wished to marry her, or her punk Italian lover. I really disliked this book, won't be reading anything else by Rossner, and won't be watching the movie. Don't invite drunk male strangers to your apartment just to ridicule them and tell them to get out unless you thrive on potentially deadly situations. Just a tip for the young single gals out there.
***Review may contain spoilers (though so does the first chapter of the book)***
I saw the ID Channel show "A Crime to Remember" (fantastic show if you like vintage true crime) about this case, sparking my interest in the book. I found the story to hit two of my hot buttons life in the 60s and the psychology behind human behavior.
The lead character, Theresa, is fascinating. Drawn to a man who doesn't treat her well (calling her "c u n t", insulting her frequently), refusing a man who does, she seems to be the poster child for low self-esteem. But it could just be a peculiar sex drive. We don't know. If she does have low self-esteem, it does not seem attributable to her fairly normal upbringing. She seems to deal with the common issues that a middle sister would. Though the author details a few specific childhood phenomena that apparently affected her -- including jealousy towards both sisters and a significant back operation -- those phenomena reveal Theresa's character rather than define it. But then, that's my general belief on nature versus nurture. People react to similar circumstances differently.
The story is the journey of Theresa into her mid-20s leading to her peculiar and untimely demise. You will find interesting discourse on issues of the day women's lib, the blossoming drug culture, and free sex, among others; interestingly, not the war. You will wonder why Theresa was so reckless regarding bringing strange men to her apartment. And ultimately, you will not be shocked at the result of her lifestyle. It is a bit of a cautionary tale, though even in the 60s, Theresas of the world knew better.
The writing is crisp and compelling, humorous at times, edgy at others. Blunt, direct, open. Using sexual words, phrases and descriptions that I suspect were fairly forward for 1975.
I chose this book because I had heard the title so much , or at least the phrase, "looking for Mr.Goodyear". I'm not even sure I knew this was a book until I stumbled across it. I purchased it after getting hooked on the free sample. I could nor put this book down and even now should be pulling out of the driveway heading to work rather than finishing the last page. I love the cylindrical effect of the beginning and ending. We see the fallout of the ending in the beginning and in the ending, you see the dramatic effects , the tense and scary motives of what the beginning was all about. Scary, tense , emotional and a bit sad, but very applicable for everyone today. I definitely recommend this for adults and especially for folks who feel like they are compromising themselves in some way looking for that Mr or Ms Right or Right now! Scary Reminder of what can happen even now!
